I was taught that the toss should be 6 to 8 inches above the tip of your racquet when you are at full extension.

The reason given was that you want to hit it at full extension for maximum power and if you toss it too high then gravity causes the ball to drop faster and it is more difficult to time.

Typically you are actually coming off the ground when the force of your upward thrust lifts you off the ground so that adds a few inches to the height of the ideal ball toss.

Also different players have different arm lengths which also affect how high the toss should be.

If you watch closely although Federer's toss appears to be very high you can see that it's only dropping about 10 inches from it's highest point to the contact point.

A few inches higher allows you to load up more before accelerating the racquet.

A relaxed arm, following the kinetic chain, staying balanced and fluid throughout the service motion wtih the hip forward and not dropping the head/tossing arm too soon so you don't hit down into the net, not opening up hips/shoulders too soon or bending the knees too early, a broad turnback of the shoulders before opening them all contribute to a good serve.

Where you land is also important since it determines whether you're ready to hit the return.

Well... I thought I can see almost all the interesting details about pro players on TV... Apparently not! :-)

I never thought RF tosses the ball sooo high...
I think the higher the toss the more problems with consistency... or not? What do you think. I would appreciate if you can come forward with some toss drills too :-)

Thanx Paul, and yes please, post the other details too.
