Federer Practice Drill

Here’s a couple of great drills I picked up in Dubai a couple of years ago whilst watching Roger Federer practice.

It’s dead simple yet so effective…..but isn’t that the trick??

Leave a comment below to tell me what you think.

The Tennis Forehand YouTube Debate Keeps Going

Just got this reply about the video I produced…….oh about a year ago.

Watch the video to get the vibe (it’s only a minute long).

Ok, here is the comment in question.

“Anyone who mimics the pros will be a generation behind. Teach the kids the basics ( closed/neutral stance) and their games will be adaptable to changes in techniques & playing styles.”

Now….

How does that work exactly?? This is exactly the kind of thinking that KEEPS players a generation behind!! How do you think players progress over the years?? They grow up following the icons of day and take on and then move on.

Surely this is obvious??

So, you have 2 things to do now.

1. Give me your take on it.

2. I am pretty much ready with a series of videos etc aimed at helping people with their forehands but I want to know what people feel they need help with/want to see so I don’t leave anything out…….so add this on as well.

Thanks!!

Tennis Footwork – Side Shuffle Clinic

The “humble” side shuffle.

We all use it to get around the tennis court right?

Wrong!!

I was watching a group of tennis players the other day whose biggest problem was not how they hit the ball, but how they moved to the ball and then arrived at the ball.

The problem was this!

Running in a straight line forwards (linear) to a ball does little to get your shoulders round and therefore your racket back – which is what you need to do in the majority of tennis shots.

Learning how to shuffle does.

This is the kind of stuff Federer and Nadal, Henin & Serena practise everyday to help them get those Wimbledon, Us Open & French Open titles.

Now, for some of you that will be something new and for some of you this will be something you already know, but for most of you, the actual correct execution of the side shuffle will be something you won’t know how to do.

Your game will be better off for finding out the finer points of this “must know” movement.

This is what I call a general/basic tennis footwork movement.

Moving Well For Clay Court Tennis

I have found that the number one thing about playing well on a clay court has nothing directly to do with shots.

It is in fact about your movement, more specifically – SLIDING.

Sliding into the ball on a clay court is vital and is the one thing that the players who don’t grow up on the surface find the hardest to add into their game.

In fact most people think that you have to learn to hit the ball and then slide.

No!!

You have to learn how to slide into your shots and then begin your recovery for the next ball – and that requires timing.

So how do you learn to do this?

Well, one of the best ways I have seen is to just get out there and slide around.

Getting a partner to throw a tennis ball onto the court in different directions while you run to and slide around to get the balls before getting the ball back to them is one of the best ways to work out how to move and recover on a clay court.

Just progress/transfer this game to when you have a racket and are hitting forehands and backhands and you are well on the way to feeling comfortable and moving better on “the dust”.
