Tennis – Is Everything You Know Wrong?

Tennis is a great sport played and enjoyed by millions all over the World.

But is the way you have been taught and therefore the way you see the game – WRONG!!!

Actually, I think it is!!

The way I see so many people approach and therefore play tennis (the game) is totally the wrong way round.

If you want to play better tennis, check out this video and tell me what you think.

  2. Very insightful, thanks for this Paul.

Most of the time the clinics that I’ve been to have only been about the “technique” aspect of tennis.

The reason for this is probably because I play with younger kids since I’ve only played tennis for a year. My technique was terrible but since I was much fitter I would find a way to win. Most coaches maybe feel that they can’t push their students too hard physically because of their age. Most professionals were really motivated at the young age by pushing themselves to the limit both on and off the court.

    • I hear what you are saying.
The truth of the matter is that there is so much more to being a good tennis player than what people call “technique”

People need to start thinking about technique as the whole process of the shot making as opposed to just the very end of the chain.

Once that happens then you really are on track.

  3. Interesting! but I am not fully convinced. I coach young children and even if I let them play matches (without racket sometimes)to discover by themselves or to win points, I do base most of my coaching on technique. If Federer is that Great it is thanks to his good technique. Nadal is powerful and different but he gets injured a lot. Why? because he must compensate physically.
I would say teach the technique first. What I do is train the very young with the mini red balls and make them have matches with the foam balls. By doing this you start having some rallys and real point. The kids learn by themselves our to win a point, move the opponent, play on their own strenght etc…

  5. I agree with your approach especially at the intermediate level and above.

Thinking about the game in this order should affect how you approach the ball and set up for it in order to hit your selected shot properly.
